What's For Lunch? (W/C 01/10)

At the rate at which the weeks are passing it is going to be Half Term pretty soon, which is a good thing but it does mean I'm running out of time to do all the things I want to do!

Monday - Cheese Sandwich

It's Picture Day! I believe that all pictures are taken before lunch and snack time (at least I hope they are, I know my children all to well and they will be covered in something if it's after) and I'm off to talk to some lovely people in London too, so I can't even run a spare sweater up to them if they need it! Today's lunch is Picture themed, by being a Cheese Sandwich or possibly roll, it depends what I make when I get up tomorrow!

Tuesday - Chicken Wrap

Daddy actually cooked the chicken on Sunday, (I was busy being a personal food shopper for my Mum) and he made a bit of a hash of carving it so I actually have a lot of chicken left on the carcass, enough to give both children a wrap and for my dinner tonight!

Unwrapped Chicken Wrap

Wednesday - Ponyo Pasta

According to the weatherman today is going to be cold and rainy and so what could be better than a warm lunch? The problem of course is that my Children have packed lunches and so I'm going to make a proper Bento as Ponyo is Japanese as in Bento! The Ponyo Pasta is pretty much the same as the evening meal version I make, some noodles, a boiled egg and some ham along with some greens served in a little bit of broth.

Thursday - Sausage Roll

I love having a Sausage roll for lunch, it's just as easy to make them as it is to buy them (which is what I did this week) and the Children love having what they think of as a treat for lunch.

Friday - Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too!

Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too! Logo

I've made great use of my filofax by making a note of all the important things in my life, appointments, BB's sugar levels, notes of meal plans AND notes of my Friday lunch ideas! Today is Harvest Festival and all the children walk to a local Church and sing songs, read bits of poems and generally entertain those parents who are able to be there too. I have made a note to remember to take BB's Emergency Blood Sugar Kit with me, (as I'm still worried that School will forget) and the special lunch today will also be Harvest Festival themed.

I'm actually quite looking forward to this weeks lunches!

What We Are Eating This Week (W/C 29/09)

So last week a few changes happened to our dinner menu. Daddy was out on Wednesday night and so the children and I decided that we would rather have Mince with Yorkshire Puddings instead of Spaghetti Bolognese, we ended up having a takeaway on Saturday instead of Pizza and on Sunday we ended up having Roasted Chicken and Chips because we had to call an Ambulance out after I decided to to remove one of my fingers... So on to this week!

Saturday - Anniversary Dinner

It's mine and Daddy's wedding anniversary today. We've been married for eleven years and so we are either going to go out and have dinner together (either Red Hot World Buffet or maybe the local Beefeater) whilst some unsuspecting relative babysits for us and if we can't con find anyone to help out the childcare front then we will hide the children in their bedrooms and have a takeaway! We will treat the children to a take away either way as they have been absolute darlings this week (for the most part).

Sunday - Roast Chicken

This week I will try not to cut my finger off whilst preparing the vegetables...

Monday - Lasagne

This is Top Ender's favourite meal and Daddy loves it when he gets to take leftovers to work with him the next day, so he's going to love this. I'm going to make two today so that I can put one in the freezer for use on a later date as it's easier that way.

Tuesday - Jacket Potatoes

Last week I had Prawns in Plum Sauce on top of my Jacket Potato, whilst the rest of the family went down the traditional Beans and Cheese route. I'm thinking that this week I'll go for some leftover Roast Chicken from Sunday with some Sweetcorn. Daddy and I are also going out tonight to the theatre so Daddy and I will be indulging in some ice-cream at intermission!

Prawns Jacket Potato

Wednesday - Cod and Chips

With Daddy having to eat Gluten free we can only ever buy Take Away Fish and Chips on a Sunday or a Monday from a localish Fish and Chip Shop. The thing is because of the cost of travelling to this Fish and Chip Shop and the higher price of this Fish and Chip Shop we can't really eat it all that often and I really love Fish and Chips so I thought I would make some at home today. It's really unhealthy because I am going to fry it, but a little bit of what you fancy does you good.

Thursday - Pizza

What can I say? It's Pizza, it's quick and it's tasty!

Friday - Bangers and Mash

All the family love Sausages and with Marks and Spencer Sausages being such a bargain of a price and Gluten Free it would be a shame not to take advantage, buy them and make one of the best meals in the world. I'm going to make an onion gravy to go with the Sausages and Mash which everyone apart from Big Boy will have as Big Boy doesn't do gravy.

So that's the meals for this week, not too bad budget wise or health wise (well apart from that battered fried Cod) but I am going to really have to push myself with the exercise to make sure that my winter diet doesn't add any more meat to my bones than is strictly necessary!

Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too - Hot Dog Hot Dogs!

I love making different lunches for the Children each week, I think that having a super special lunch each Friday is just a small way that I can show them that I love them, that I'm thinking of them even when they are at School and that I'm interested in what they eat and by making it fun they get the best lunch in School and a good giggle too! This week I decided that what the children really needed was Hot Dog in Dog Shaped Rolls!

Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too! Logo

Making the rolls was really easy... especially as I had a can of fresh rolls in the fridge! Instead of pulling them apart and making them into Six rolls I made two large dough balls (two rolls each) and held back the the last two rolls to make the add on parts of the dog. With the large dough ball I rolled it out so that it was fairly flat and wide and then rolled the actual Hot Dog into the dough so it was all covered.

I then used the last two rolls to make four legs, two tails, four ears and two snouts which I stuck on using water and making a slightly small hole for the pieces to be poked into the body of the dog.

I then baked the hot dog dog rolls in the oven and left them to cool before putting into the Children's lunch boxes!

Top Ender Has New Boots!

Everybody knows that Top Ender is going to be a fashion designer when she is older. She tells everyone, and answers all questions with a statement about how she is going to live in Paris, have a fashion house and design clothes; Even if the question was something like "Do you like Oranges?". At the last parents evening at least five minutes of our appointment was spent discussing Top Ender's future and even in a recent Parents Welcome Assembly she managed to sneak in a reference to her future career!

There are hundreds of sketches all over the house of dresses, tops, trouser suits, skirts, shoes, handbags, dog clothes, cat clothes, children's clothes and she does have a couple of verbal orders for wedding dresses, so I do think that she will one day live her dream and keep me in the manner in which I'm sure I could get very used to very quickly! The problem is when you are on a tight budget and you have a fashionista for a daughter, you can rarely keep everyone happy. Luckily I do manage to hunt out a few bargains to keep Tops happy and she loves using accessories to complete her outfit. At the moment that is mainly hats and boots and she and Big Boy will walk happily team up to expand their own collections of hats!

Top Ender Wearing a Hat

M&M Direct often send me emails with different products on offer and by chance an email from their PR Team had a pair of boots in that caught Top Ender's eye, Cutie Patent Chelsea Boots. So I asked if they would like Top Ender reviewing them and they agreed and sent a pair out. To say Top Ender was thrilled would be an understatement, she has been wearing them almost non stop since they arrived and with a variety of outfits and making me take pictures so that she can keep a record of what her outfit choices look like!

Top Ender's Boots from M&M Direct

As you can see the boots are a cute ankle boot and shiny (they are patent) which Tops loves, as do I really as it means I don't have to polish them only give them a good wipe. Tops wasn't used to not having a close fit around her ankles to start with but she quickly got used to them. The sole of the shoe is quite thick, but light at the same time which is great as they will last a while but aren't too uncomfortable for Tops to wear for long periods.

Top Ender loves the boots and at £19.99 they are a price that even Top Ender could save up her weekly pocket money with the intention to buy the boots without getting too despondent about how long it was taking and even Santa might agree to add a similar pair to his Sleigh this year

We were sent a pair of boots to review.

School Uniform - Mummy Giggles

School has been back for a couple of weeks now and both Top Ender and Big Boy are in full swing of coming home after school, changing out of their School Uniform and then getting in to their after school clothes. I do have to keep reminding them that they need to give me their dirty uniform so that I can wash it, but they seem to be ignoring me on that part and I keep finding discarded pieces of uniform all around the house which I gather up to wash so that they are ready for the next day. I was really worried about Big Boy having his first PE lesson as I was sure that he was going to come home wearing Uniform that didn't belong to us because of his habit of stripping off and leaving his uniform where ever it landed.

Tesco School Uniform

So the PE Lesson happened. Big Boy used up lots of energy running round and had a low blood sugar because of it (which was sorted out before lunch) and so his teacher helped him out by putting his PE Kit back into his bag for him. That evening when he walked out of the School Gate, instead of wearing the Tesco School Uniform that I had sent him to School wearing he was wearing a jumper with the School logo on. Something that Tesco don't sell and I didn't buy.

I knew it would happen, Big Boy was wearing somebody else's uniform.

Big Boy's teacher was standing just by the gate, so I asked her if there was a Tesco Knit jumper in the classroom that might belong to Big Boy. She was quite certain that there wasn't but as I had named all of the clothes that Big Boy was going to be wearing at School she was also certain that his jumper would be returned tomorrow and was more than likely to have been taken by the child whose jumper Big Boy was wearing. The teacher looked into the back of the jumper Big Boy was wearing to find out whose name was written in it and looked confused. So I took a look.

Neatly written on the label was Big Boy's name. In my handwriting.

I may have never brought a School Jumper for Big Boy or Top Ender but I had been given a few by High Heels Mum and had completely forgot that I had placed one of them in Big Boys PE bag for outdoor PE! I had to laugh as I explained the situation and the Teacher explained that she may have put BB's Tesco jumper into his PE Bag, which a quick check confirmed.

Daddy says this story has no point and that it needs something more; maybe a troop of Dancers or an explanation that I was worried that the good Tesco Jumper was being replaced by a slightly faded School jumper... Really though it's like most of my stories, it doesn't have a point other than letting you all have a good laugh at me!

We were sent Tesco School Uniform for both Top Ender and Big Boy.

What's For Lunch? (W/C 24/09)

This week is going to be fun, like I said yesterday we're trying to use up all the bits and pieces that we have in the Freezer and cupboards and so it's a good old clear out! I got given a Filofax to play with and I've been using it to make notes of what lunches the children can have and ideas of things they could have for Friday Lunches as well as keeping a note of Big Boy's blood sugar levels after different foods so that I can make sure he stays stable through the day at School.

Monday - Chicken Bagels

We have Chicken bagels today, Big Boy really loves them and Top Ender didn't get a chance to eat her ham one last week after she was only given FIVE MINUTES to eat her lunch! As you can guess I wasn't too happy and did kind of BLOW UP about it as soon as I knew. Luckily Top Ender's teacher had part of it in hand and a strongly worded letter handed to the new Head Teacher the next morning had things slightly better the next day but it's not stopping me from stirring up a revolution in the parents lol.

Bagel Packed Lunch

Tuesday - Mini Pitta Breads

We have little pitta breads (or is it pita breads?)  in the freezer and we love how we can fill them up with different fillings and as they are small you can have more than one kind of filling too! I'm going to have a cheese one, a ham one and a boiled egg one, so hopefully both Big Boy and Top Ender will have at least one that they will like.

Wednesday - Frittata

It's the last of the second batch of Frittata and I won't be making any more for a while as the children need a "break" from it. Actually I need a break from it and I want to make other egg based dishes for lunch and I can't if they keep having Frittata! Still it's been handy having one lunch a week ready made.

Thursday - Ham Sandwiches

Huh? Ham Sandwiches? No, special extras? Just plain ham sandwiches? You'll have to watch the Facebook page on Thursday to see what the twist will be.

Friday - Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too!

This Friday I have a great idea planned, but I'm not sure it will be as great as I'm hoping... It was supposed to be a meal a couple of weeks ago but I didn't get enough time so I'm hoping that it works out well this week!

What We Are Eating This Week (W/C 22/09)

We're eating cheap this week, it's nearly the end of the month and so I'm trying to make our budget stretch as far as possible and I really need to finish running down the freezers (we have three) now that I know what's in them!

Saturday - Pizza

Gluten Free Pizza isn't always as lovely as it should be but we have it tonight because we have some bases in the cupboard, we always have tomato purée or paste in the fridge or cupboard and there is always Ham, Cheese and Pineapple hanging about too. Just a shame they won't be shaped like Top Ender's Hello Kitty Friday Lunch or Big Boy's Mario Toad Mushroom Friday Lunch just a plain circle.

Hello Kitty and Toad from Mario Pizza

Sunday - Roast Dinner

A Roast is the highlight of the week for the family. We love sitting together and eating and chatting and just generally having fun together. Daddy is always trying to make the children laugh instead of eating their dinner and I'm always trying to make them eat their dinner without laughing at Daddy's jokes so we all have great fun at dinner.

Monday - Jacket Potatoes

I love doing Jacket Potatoes for dinner, it only takes a few minutes to prepare them and throw them in the oven and then that's it, they are cooked and all you have to do is add some Baked Beans some Cheese and you're done. Also not only is it really cheap but it's tasty and everyone eats it!

Tuesday - Honey Mustard Chicken

We love Honey Mustard Chicken, I am cheating this week and have a Chicken Tonight jar to add to the meal instead of making my own and it will be served with vegetables and Mashed Potato, because I like that the sauce gets soaked up into the potato.

Wednesday - Spaghetti Bolognese

The children love Spaghetti Bolognese because it's fun to make Stupid Girl Duck Posing Faces (AKA Invisible Spaghetti) when slurping it up.

Invisible Spaghetti Faces

Thursday - Chicken Casserole

It's starting to get colder and so casserole is a key dinner for putting "meat" on your bones and keeping you warm when you won't turn on the heating until the middle of October...

Friday - Hot Dogs

Daddy will be making Hot Dogs, Mash and Beans for dinner for him and Big Boy tonight. Top Ender is staying overnight at a friends house and I'm out at the MAD Blog Awards. I'm not sure who is more excited about dinner this Friday!

So that's the plans for this week. I have had some Dalepak vouchers delivered this week so I'll be stocking up the freezer with some of the dishes that they produce and I also won some vouchers in a School Raffle for a local Freezer Centre so I'll be stocking up with those too!

Dalepak sent me some vouchers like I said. :0)

Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too - Rainbow Pasta

I love Pinterest for the ideas I get for food at home (If you want to see if you can guess my ideas for the weeks Friday lunch follow my Top Ender's Friday Lunch and Big Boy's Too pinterest board) and this weeks idea was straight from Pinterest! Edible Rainbow Pasta.

Rainbow Pasta

Making the pasta was incredibly simple and just a matter of adding food dye to the water you are going to cook the pasta in. As pasta absorbs the water it also absorbs the colour from the food dye and you end up with coloured pasta!

I did this before the children got up this morning and luckily I remember fairly well my colour mixing charts, but this would be a great one to do with children learning about what colours added together make what colour. I only had liquid food dye in the house, as my gels have run out, and as such the colours weren't as vibrant as I was hoping that they would be. The Red has come out as a dark Orange, the Green actually came out Yellow and the Purple came out Green (I have no idea how that happened!).

The great thing is that they do look like food colours that you would eat so I'm happy that this lunch will be eaten all up!

Big Boy's Rainbow PastaTop Ender's Rainbow Pasta

Big Boy has seen the pasta this morning and thinks that the blue pasta is rather cool whilst Top Ender has said that it was a nice surprise, so even though it wasn't as brilliant as I hoped we're taking it as a good sign that this weeks lunch is a success.

A Garden Camp Fire

I love September. For me it's an important month because it's the month I think of the year starting. We are back to School and Daddy and I were married so it was the start of my married life too! I love to think of September as the last part of the Summer, but as it is cooler it means that it's a time for camp fires and blankets and sitting on the beach in the Sand Dunes with picnic blankets round your shoulders... so I came up with a plan. A couple of weekends ago, on what we thought might be the last warm day of the year I had a plan for a camp fire in the back garden, thanks to an Eco Grill that had been sent to us.

We started off the evening by roasting hot dogs over the fire, the children thought it was great fun although they weren't too keen on the smoke that blew in all directions thanks to an all directions wind that picked up. Daddy and I thought it was great, we loved cooking over an open fire, it's so different to cooking on a BBQ! The great thing too about the Eco Grill was that the food got smoked and gave a really lovely taste to the Hot Dogs.

Hot Dogs being Roasted over an Eco Grill Open Fire

The children did have a little go, but soon got bored of holding the forks over the fire and so Daddy and I were doing most of the cooking, but it was so simple we didn't care. Top Ender and I are Sweetcorn fans and so I had added a couple of cobs in tinfoil to the coals in the fire and just occasionally turned it as I didn't want the sweetcorn to be burnt on one side.

Sweetcorn wrapped in Tin foil on the Eco Grill

After we had the hot dogs and sweetcorn we decided to roast marshmallows and make some S'mores. The children loved toasting the marshmallows over the fire, although they weren't too good at it. Making up the S'mores was even easier, we put the toasted marshmallows in between two digestive biscuits with a little square of chocolate and the children thought this was the best pudding ever!

Top Ender eating a S'moreBig Boy eating a S'more

It was whilst we were making the S'mores and commenting on how sweet the sweetcorn had been that Daddy thought about popping some popcorn. As you can see in this little video, popping popcorn is rather fun over an open fire!

After we had eaten and cleared away all the food we sat around the fire watching it burn down. It was just like in all the books I have read where the hero or heroine sit around a fire with a blanket around their shoulders to keep warm. The only thing we didn't have was a guitar to strum! After a while when the camp fire was starting to burn itself out (by burning itself all up) we set off a few fireworks to mark the end of summer.

The Eco Grill Camp Fire

I know that Top Ender is always asking if we can make something an annual thing, but having a camp fire at the end of summer just to say we were here, we spent time together, we enjoy life is a great way to mark the end of Summer and I can't wait to do it again at the end of next Summer.

We were sent an EcoGrill which was rather cool!

Big Boy's School Day

Before he started School Top Ender told Big Boy that at School she has to sit down and work, that the teacher tells her that they are going to do Maths or Writing or French or something else and everyone has to do it. After a few days of going to School, Big Boy has realised that his School day isn't like Top Ender's. His School day doesn't have designated times to sit and write, or do Maths or French. His day is more about playing with the water table, painting or cutting or sticking and sometimes reading stories with a teacher or a teaching assistant.

Big Boy is upset because he hasn't been doing any work at school just playing.

He's complained to me about it, he's complained to the teacher about it, he's complained to the Teaching Assistants about it and I think finally one of them broke down and gave him some actual work to do just to stop him complaining that he didn't want to play any more.

Big Boy likes playing on the Wii

I think that this is his way of still keeping up his little rebellious streak.

Big Boy And His First Low At School

It sounds wrong to say that Big Boy had a low blood sugar reading at School and I was happy about it, but that is exactly what happened.
Big Boy before having a low

Yesterday was the last day that I was supervising Big Boy having his injection at lunch before the staff at the School take over fully. I had wanted Big Boy to have a low when I was there so that those responsible for looking after him would be able to see how to handle it, to know that it is as simple as giving him some fast acting sugar and then his injection and lunch if it was before lunch, some fast acting sugar and a slow release follow up if it was at any other time and that there was no reason to panic.

They did of course panic.

It wasn't the wild eyed running around that I had imagined, but there was the wide eyes as they realised that this wasn't normal. They knew that they had to act on something, something that they hadn't yet practised and had only read about happening.

I knew they would panic and because I was there and I knew that they weren't going to be ready, I was able to read the panic in their eyes, and react without them having to show Big Boy that they were scared. I felt reassured that they were able to see me react to it, and to see that Big Boy knows how to handle it too. Big Boy was fine, he understands about lows now and knows how to fix them and it wasn't long before he was back with his class, eating his lunch being the little dynamo that he normally is.

Big Boy having a low

The School are ready now.

They've seen Big Boy having a low, they can see how he goes pale, how his eyes go a little glassy, how he becomes quiet and starts to glisten a little (just me or does anyone else think he sounds like a Twilight Vampire?) and they know that they need to test him as soon as they can when they see this.

They've seen what they have to do, they know that Big Boy can talk them through what they need to do and they know that they are going to be okay.

Now the two pictures in this post were taken on the same day and not that long apart, but can you see the signs that let us know that in the second picture that Big Boy is having a low compared to the first picture?

The Jungle Junction Twitter Party

We had a Jungle Junction Twitter party this evening, co-hosted by several bloggers with UKMums TV. Some of our guests were unable to make it at the last minute (I don't blame them I'm a rather random Mother in the School Playground and they only just met me), but my Sister and her children arrived ready for lots of fun and food and of course some tweeting! Big Boy has been so excited about the party ever since the box of prizes and toys to play with arrived. He had a lot of ideas about what we would do and was very vocal about the food we should have too. Luckily as I mentioned in my meal plan post earlier this week what I had planned was pretty much what had been suggested and was also what Big Boy thought was good party food.

I'm not sure that my words can convey all the fun that we had at the party, so instead here are some pictures that my sister and I took during the two hours that we were officially having the party (my sister is rather like me and always the last to leave the party!). I hope you enjoy them!

The party was great fun and we were pleased when Daddy arrived home to tell us that we had trended on Twitter at one point during the party. It was a lot of fun and the children who won prizes were very excited with their new toys and of course everyone loved the food which was the part I was most worried about!

Rough Justice - A Review

Tom Conti. That was all I needed to read to know that I wanted to see Rough Justice. It's not that I have an inappropriately placed crush on him like I do Alan Rickman, it's just that it's TOM CONTI!

The play is a about a television journalist called James Highwood (played by the lovely Tom) who has made a career out of challenging the British Justice system in documentaries (I'd probably watch them if they were real!) and now finds himself brought to court on a charge of murder (his brain damaged child) which he admits to, but pleads manslaughter. For some reason he decides to defend himself and seems to just want to annoy the judge! I don't know much about the courtroom but I'm pretty sure you don't want to annoy the judge.

Tom Conti looking worried. Maybe he's heard about me.

My Mum and I listened to a lot of the audience around us who had different views on the storyline and if James Highwood should be found guilty or not and about the morals of mercy killings never mind the legality.

It was really good. It got the audience talking, Tom Conti was fabulous and I'm pretty sure that there is some valuable social commentary in the play that I'll probably understand in the morning, but right now at half eleven all I can think of is sleep!

We were given two tickets to Rough Justice thanks to Milton Keynes Theatre.

What's For Lunch? (W/C 17/09)

After tomorrow I won't be going in to the School at lunch time to supervise BB having his insulin injection (unless there is an issue) so this week I'm trying to be extra careful with what is in the lunch box just to make sure that both he and Tops have great lunches that are healthy, balanced and allow them to concentrate all afternoon too!

Monday - Chicken Wraps

It's a Monday and we had Chicken for lunch yesterday, which means there is a Chicken breast with my children's name on it! I'm giving them both a yoghurt today too so I'm guessing that BB is going to come home covered in it!

Tuesday - Frittata

I've made another Frittata and frozen it, so the children will have it heated up and kept warm in their thermos lunch boxes. As this is another lunch that is quite high in protein but low in carbs there is some special cake in the lunch boxes today.

Wednesday - Ham Bagel

Big Boy has just discovered Bagels, he is amazed because they are round like doughnuts but are BREAD! I think he is really missing his doughnuts so there are a few treats in his lunch box today so that he doesn't feel that he is missing out on everything that he loves.

Thursday - Mixed Cheese, Carrot and Cucumber Rolls

I'm getting the hang of making my own rolls and so the children are having to eat the practice rolls as there are getting to be a fair few of them! I thought that I would use a couple of different cheeses and mix in some shredded carrot and cucumber so that the children were getting extra veggies! Plus it's one of my favourite lunches and it feels like ages since we last had it!

Friday - Top Ender's Friday Lunch And Big Boy's Too!

You have to love a Friday lunch especially when this week's is something that I'm dead excited about! I'm just hoping that Big Boy and Top Ender will love the lunch as much as I hope they will as I'm rather looking forward to making this one and eating it too!

What We Are Eating This Week (15/09)

At the moment Daddy isn't "feeling" food. He doesn't fancy anything for dinner and he isn't suggesting meals. I'm not sure if he is coming down with something or if he just isn't fancying food because he is having changes in his body from the exercise he is doing. Anyway it means that I'm having to come up with everything on my own, so we are back to basics!

Saturday - Hot Dog Spaghetti

We had this what seems like ages ago, but it is a proper people pleaser. Who doesn't like hot dogs and Spaghetti? I'm only going to cook a few pieces of spaghetti in the hot dogs as I'm rather eager to try colouring the spaghetti into different colours as I've seen on Pinterest so frequently in the last few days.

Sunday - Roast Chicken

Sunday=Roast Chicken here. I think that I make a rather lovely roast and I am always careful with the portions so that BB, Tops, Daddy and I get a treat and we don't make BB's sugar level go too high! We are using the last of our potatoes (for real this time) but I must remember to get some Goose Fat as I do like the way they crisp up the potatoes!

Monday - Sausage and Bean Casserole

I love Sausage and Bean Casseroles, and as the rest of the family wolfed this down the last time we had it I'm thinking that this is going to be a lovely family meal. Plus as I'm out in the afternoon taking my Mum to the hospital it can cook away on it's own so that it's all ready before my Mum and I go out to the theatre.

Tuesday - Jungle Junction Twitter Party Tea

We're having a little party tonight and having a Jungle Junction themed party tea. There will be pizzas (which I had decided on before they were suggested by the PR Team!), fruit, cake and a little surprise that wouldn't be out of place in a Top Ender and Big Boy Friday Lunch box! Daddy won't be home until the end of the party so I think that he might cheat and grab something at work.

Wednesday - Hot Smoked Mackerel and Prawn Risotto

I'm stealing and adapting this from the Fish Is The Dish website as they do have some lovely recipes on the website plus I love Smoked Mackerel and Prawns. You know I'm thinking with Daddy not feeling food at the minute it's actually doing me a benefit as I get to have my favourite foods!

Thursday - Chicken Nuggets and Chips

I quite like making Chicken Nuggets and I know that the children love them as much as I do. I'm going to make a couple of sauces to go with them for Daddy and I, Sweet Chilli for Daddy and Lemon for me as I can pretend then that they are actually Lemon Chicken pieces from the Chinese!

Friday - Mince and Onion Pie

I always think that mince and onion needs a pastry topping and that's what it's going to get tonight! It's going to be served with Mash Potato which since I moulded into the shape of ice-creams using my cookie cutters the children have been waiting to get again! We're thinking that this week we'll have star shapes!

What are you planning for dinner this week? Do you have a standby meal that you know that even those who aren't "feeling" food will eat and enjoy? If so what is it because I really need to know to get Daddy back into giving me some suggestions for dinner as we'll be back to eating Chicken every night if he isn't careful!

The Cost of Going Back To School

I don't normally do inforgraphics, but this one from Savoo.co.uk made me think about the real cost of the children going back to school especially now that I have two children going to School.

Do you spend anything close to this or do you have some smart tips for saving money with the back to school expenses?

Top Ender's Friday Lunch - Hello Kitty Pizza

I was really excited about lunch today. So much so that after Aqua last night I went to the shop to buy the ingredients I had forgot at the weekend and found myself skipping round Tesco in anticipation. I even got up super early and instead of going to the gym made pizza. Hello Kitty Pizza.

Hello Kitty Pizza

Ignore the pizza to the right, that's Big Boy's Toad Pizza which you can read about in his Lunch post!

So, the Hello Kitty Pizza is really easy to make. Make Pizza dough, (or like me buy a pack from the Fridges in Tesco that is reduced because it has a sell by date of the next day) and then shape in to the classic Hello Kitty/Cat face shape. Spread pizza sauce over the pizza, sprinkle cheese, add a pineapple nose, some stripes  for whiskers and eyes (Aubergine) add a ham bow to her ear and you are done!

Hello Kitty Pizza

How adorable right? Tops has actually only got half the pizza to eat at lunch as it's rather a thick base having "swelled" up in the oven more than I anticipated. She had to see the pizza before I cut it so her surprise lunch was a little early today, but she said;

"Wow! That's a cool Hello Kitty Pizza!"

So I'll take that as a brilliant response for a brilliant Friday lunch.

Big Boy's Friday Lunch - Toad From Mario Pizza

As I said in Top Ender's Friday Lunch Post, where I've made her a Hello Kitty Pizza, I was so excited to make these Pizzas I was skipping round the supermarket when collecting the ingredients we needed. Making the Pizzas this morning was rather fun and the children got to see the pizzas before they went to School because I had to cut them in half as they rose more than I thought they would!

Toad From Mario Pizza

To make the toad shape (who I think looks more like Tigger from Pooh Bear) you shape it so that the top is more bulbous than the bottom in a classic "mushroom" shape after all Toad from Mario is a Toadstool. I then covered the stem in "white" cheese (it's a mozzarella and cheddar mix) and using a cookie cutter made two circles of the white cheese on the cap. I then covered the rest of the cap in red cheese (Red Leicester, which as we all know is actually Orange but close enough you know!) before placing two Aubergine stripes for eyes.

Big Boy knew what it was as soon as he saw it and got very excited because even though he hasn't been playing Mario for the last few days (Madagascar on the Xbox has taken over, we're reviewing it and I'll post a review soon but it's fab!) he was really excited and can't wait to show his friends his Friday Lunch.

Red Hot World Buffet - My Mum Is Going To Move In!

The other night when my Mum and I were going to the theatre we decided that we would make a night of it and go for a meal first. As if Red Hot World Buffet had read our minds, they asked if we wouldn't like to go and have a meal on them and let you know the good, the bad and the downright tasty aspects. Being big fans of Red Hot, we of course said YES and I booked a table for 6pm on the Monday, leaving the family at home with some Sausage Casserole.

My Mum has been to Red Hot a few times, and we were shown to our table next to the window that overlooks part of the Theatre District. As soon as we were sat down our drinks order was taken (Diet Coke for my Mum, Lemonade for me) and we were told to go and help ourselves as soon as we were ready. As the restaurant didn't know that I was reviewing them, I thought it best to only take a few pictures surreptitiously (ooh look at me I even spelt it right first time!).

The first thing I noticed was that the different dishes not only had their names next to them, but also stated if they were suitable for Vegetarians (that would be the big green V you can see there) and some had a GF logo in the corner too, which means people like Daddy who eat Gluten Free could easily see what they could eat quite safely.

The thing that I love best about Red Hot World Buffet is that if you want to have a bit of Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Thai, Japanese, Italian and Mediterranean cuisine all on one plate you can do. Or of course you can go for your favourites from all of these different menus.

My Mum and I did just that, both choosing foods that caught our eye, foods we hadn't tried before, foods we loved and never made ourselves and even foods we don't normally eat. We actually made complete pigs of ourselves, mainly because neither of us had eaten all day and only a little bit because sometimes you can't stop eating when you are at a buffet serving such a variety of food.

I'm pretty sure that if we didn't have theatre tickets my Mum would have quite happily stayed in the restaurant all night sampling the different dishes. I felt a little sick at how much I had eaten, but my Mum kept going up for more!

I did eventually manage to get her to stop eating the main courses and steer her in the direction of the puddings. I know from previous visits that I love the Apple Crumble that they make, especially because you can pour custard all over it and that is just what I did. My Mum on the other hand went for slices of fruit and a few different slices of cake. She had decided that she wanted to try everything she fancied and nothing was going to stop her!

The thing that you have to remember when going to Red Hot is that you aren't going for a silver service meal. This is a buffet of world foods and it is mass produced, so when you go to the sweet and sour Pork you might find that somebody has already gone through the dish and fished out all the pork leaving you with bits of pineapple, but it's not really that much of a big deal as the food is soon replenished and you can get what you want then.

If you are like me and my Mum and love a little bit of all cuisines then Red Hot is perfect and you'll have a great time trying different foods, eating your favourites and possibly discovering some new ones. Whilst the staff are polite and prompt don't go expecting anything more than that or you will leave feeling disappointed. Oh and if you do go soon have some of the Apple Crumble for me!

Our meal was paid for by Red Hot World Buffet, but as I've said we've been plenty of times before and we do love the place.
