What We Are Eating W/C 1st May 2020

It's May already! I almost can't believe it, but today is my birthday and heck yeah it's going to be a good year. I think that I'm rather lucky to be experiencing a birthday in lockdown, as it means I'm safe, my family are safe and what a great meal out we'll be having when we can get together!

Plus, and this is deadly serious, how many times would you pay for being told to stay at home on your birthday? To not spend unnecessary money, to not have people spend unnecessary money on you? To not overeat or in some cases overdrink, to be with the people you love (if you're lucky enough to be in lockdown with them that is) doing some of the things that you love and being able to spend time and plan? I think I'd do that every year if I could.

PippaD and Flyfour enjoying a walk

Saturday - Picnic!

I love a picnic birthday, and even though it is going to be a bit chilly and possibly rain a bit we'll be having some fun together with a picnic of some of my favourite foods, although I can't help but think I've forgotten something! Of course, it'll probably be indoors but that's not an issue, I've had plenty of living room picnics in my life, and I think they might actually be some of the best picnics I've ever had.

We'll be going for my traditional Birthday Walk, but it'll be a little closer to home this year and I'm thinking we'll watch a film together on the projector, eat a tonne of popcorn and I'll probably drink my bodyweight in Dr Pepper. I'm just not sure which film we'll watch yet, I might see if Flyfour has anything special planned because I think he might and if not then there are at least a zillion films that I love and would happily watch time and time again.

Sunday - Roast Lamb

I did think about having this on Friday for VE Day, but I'm working and I thought it might be better for us to have something else and to enjoy the time that we have together, especially after having been fasting today, as it is the first Sunday of the month. The great thing about having the lamb means that Flyfour will also make some lovely roasties, some Yorkshire puddings, plenty of veg and because it is my birthday weekend I might even get away with having a pile of sprouts even though they aren't the children's favourite.

Monday -  Fish Pie

Flyfour really hates Fish Pie but I figure that if we do it tonight he won't care when he gets home because he'll be so exhausted from working and driving that he'll just eat whatever I put in front of him! I'm going to make it with eggs, dairy-free milk and cheese because of Top Ender, but will make a small one for Flyfour without Eggs and if he's super lucky not that much fish either!

Tuesday - Spaghetti Carbonara

Top Ender was asking after us having a Carbonara, and so I thought that it would be great if she made it tonight, or at least a version of it and a version that doesn't include mushrooms as she'll really notice those if she is cooking! It's really a cheats way of doing it, as I'll teach Tops to make it by gently frying some onions and some bacon whilst boiling her pasta and then mixing it together with a tablespoon or two of her pasta water and a packet of dairy-free cream cheese. The only thing that we'll really have to be careful about is making sure she knows that I keep the starchy water to feed to some plants once it has cooled down.

Wednesday - Meatballs and Mash

Simple, easy and something we've been craving from Ikea! Luckily we have lingonberry jam and I know how to make the sauce, so we'll be grand! heck, it's so easy that I might even get the children to make it without any help from the adults. That'll work right?

Thursday - Home Made Pizza

I'm really craving a proper pizza and luckily Flyfour and I are rather excellent at making them. I have no idea who of us will be cooking, but I do know we'll be eating Pizza! We'll have all the usual toppings that each member of the family like the best on their pizzas and I'll make sure to have some sweetcorn for Top Ender and as much cheese and mushrooms as I can handle.

Friday - VE Day Steak

I did want to either have the lamb today or do something to celebrate VE Day. Flyfour suggested we have something that represented VE Day, which is why I'd suggested lamb as it was British, but Flyfour said we should go with something that started with VE. We thought Veal, Vermicelli, Vegetarian, Vegan and even a combination of them all. Flyfour, in the end, realised though there was something way better,  very tasty steak. So that's what we're going to have.

So that's what we are eating this week. How about you?
